The program is designed to give young adults, ages 14-17, an opportunity to learn about the fire service while providing a community service. The Post gives youths the opportunity to explore fire fighting and emergency medical services to determine if it is a vocation they would be interested in pursuing.
Members not only get a first hand look at the fire service, they are given the opportunity to enjoy organized recreational activities, competitive events and community interaction while working in a professional atmosphere. Exploring gives young people the opportunity to develop interpersonal relationships, leadership and organizational skills.
Explorers are exposed to fire department operations which include fire fighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, rescues and public service. The Explorer training program includes instruction in the following areas:
The objective of the training is to promote learning, teamwork, leadership, and organization with a hands-on approach that allows the member to experience fire department operations under close supervision.

Frequently Asked Questions
What functions do Explorers perform?
Explorers assist firefighters with support operations while riding on fire apparatus. They may assist in deploying hose lines, changing SCBA cylinders, assisting in salvage & overhaul; and retrieving equipment on medical emergency calls. These are a few of the skills Explorers are taught and perform.
Do Explorers need any experience to join?
Explorers must complete a training program that teaches Explorers basic skills to serve as a member of a firefighting team. Certified firefighters that serve as post advisors provide the training during the bi-monthly meetings.
Does joining the Explorers certify me as a firefighter?
It is not the intent of the Rollinsford Fire Department to certify Explorers as firefighters. The Explorer program helps serve as an educational tool that will benefit Explorers planning to become firefighters. We will provide a comprehensive and regimented training program that will get Rollinsford Fire Explorers as close to being certifed as possible.
Does joining the Explorer Post cost Anything? Explorers are required to pay for insurance that is provided through the Daniel Webster Council. It is an annual cost of $11.00. Explorers are also expected to pay a monthly dues of $2.00 to the post.
Is there a uniform requirement? Explorers are provided with a department t-shirt. They are required to attend bi-monthly meetings and associated Explorer events wearing the department t-shirt, dark blue pants (Dickies style), black shoes or boots, black socks if wearing shoes, and a black belt. It is the responsibility of the Explorer to provide items other than the department t-shirt.
